New Animal Surgery Center Project (Input Needed)

Posted by Analiza Bortell on

Last year one of Alexis’s animals had a medical emergency and while talking to the veterinarian the subject of surgery came up.  It was asked what happens when people can’t afford the surgery.  The basic answer was either the animal lives with it or in some cases euthanasia.  There are some programs, veterinarians, and local charities that assist in this area but, unfortunately, not enough.

We have been brainstorming ideas tailored to our situation and believe we are at a stage we can share them with you.

This problem can be helped if a low-cost animal surgery facility is predictably available (meaning it can be requested) but the upfront and operational costs can be high for a 24x7 traditional brick and mortar location and the charity funding model is not consistent enough to rent or lease a facility full-time.

We believe there is a way we can help but we can’t do it alone.  We can make the land, power, and well water available here on the farm for a small animal surgery center.  We will make every reasonable effort to integrate this facility into one of our planned construction projects or an existing structure.  We will also extend the existing physical security to cover this new facility and attempt to extend insurance to the facility if it can reasonably be done.  *The other idea is to build it inside a new shipping container so it can be deployed in case of an emergency or natural disaster.

On the funding side, we plan to partially copy the Patches of Hope model within the new OneLuv Organics vegetable business we are launching in June.  This alone won’t be enough at first.  We are hoping to work with local organizations, schools, and veterinarians to provide staff volunteers a day or two a month.  There are some ideas to increase availability by partnering with local animal ERs and hospitals as well but they are in very early stages.

We need consultant(s) to help us continue to develop this idea.  We are building budgets for equipment, inspections, and licensing to meet minor large and small animal surgery center requirements in Colorado.  We will design the facility with the idea of expanding capabilities in the future.

If you or someone you know works in the design, construction, equipment, or business management of these facilities please email us at liza@oneluvorganics.com.

This idea is in the very early stages and we will update you if it develops.

Thank you.
